Barrier-Free Communication Seminar during May 10-16 Disability Week

Seminar with the theme of barrier-free communication was held at Tarsus University Conference Hall for the May 10-16 Disability Week. In the seminar organized by Tarsus University Disabled Students Counseling and Coordination Unit in cooperation with the Information and Communication Office, the role of accessible communication and media tools in the participation of disabled people in social life was discussed.

Coordinator of the Disabled Students Counseling and Coordination Nurel Ertürk, in her opening speech of the program, emphasized that accessible communication plays an important role in the participation of disabled individuals in social life. She stated that the seminar organized aims to raise awareness in this area. In the seminar, Lecturer w
ho made a presentation with the title of “Accessible Social Media, Barrier-Free Communication”. Banu Coşkun presented examples of pioneering studies on accessibility in the field of media and communication in the world. She also shared the basic principles of barrier-free content production in digital media tools with the participants.Dursun Arslan, who is the President of the Mersin City Council Disabled People's Assembly and also the President of the Tarsus Disabled People's Platform, shared his experiences with the audience. In his speech, Arslan, who is visually impaired, touched upon the accessibility problems he encountered in social life and various fields. Pointing out the vital importance of accessible and inclusive communication at this point, Arslan gave examples of media applications that facilitate the lives of the disabled thanks to the opportunities offered by the developing technology. Bedia Dinçkuyucu, Vice President for Education at Tarsus Platform for People with Disabilities, also gave a speech at the seminar and shared the difficulties faced by hearing impaired individuals in their educational lives with the audience through concrete examples. Dinçkuyucu emphasized that sign language is of vital importance for hearing impaired individuals and stated that in order for these individuals to participate effectively in education, communication environments where they can express themselves and understand themselves should be provided. The seminar organized for the Disability Week ended with the questions of the participants and mutual evaluations.
